Brandon comes with us to beach!

Brandon was home to go with us today to the beach. This time the boys brought their skim boards. The big boys played in the waves for a while...
Yes...Brandon wore his baseball hat into the water - I even videotaped him diving into the waves with it on...

Elli took her afternoon nap for the first part of our visit...

Jason played it safe by the stroller - he is slowly warming up to the waves...

Once the boys tried their skim boards in the waves, they realized that skim boards do not float like boogie boards. So, they tried to use the boards the way they are supposed to be used...

Reagan even tried...

Once Elli woke up, she and mommy watched the boys play...

Airshow at the beach!

I remember when we lived in AZ, and we got our first Zoo membership, we would all say how we loved that we could take a couple of hours and go to the zoo any day we wanted. Well, now that we live 15 minutes from the beach, we can say that about visiting the beach!! Yesterday we went to the beach for a glorious 2 hours. It was overcast, but it was beautiful, and it was FUN!!!!!

We spread out our blanket and munched on popcorn...

We played in the sand...

We went for a walk on the beach...

Got our feet wet...
Looked for seashells, sea glass, and pretty rocks...

Took our dinosaurs for a swim...

Trevor found a clam...

Which he quickly dissected when we got home...
THEN THE AIR SHOW STARTED!!!
Jason didn't like how loud the jets were...
But it was soooo cool to sit on the beach and watch the Thunderbirds fly by...
Trevor and Joshua are so busy enjoying the water, they don't even notice the Thunderbirds in formation...
Two boys were racing the jets...
They flew right over us several times - you can kinda see the bird painted on the belly of the jet...
It was a very relaxing and fun afternoon...
And I am very thankful for the time we are getting to spend in New Jersey;)!
Brandon was working security at the airshow for Civil Air Patrol, that is why he isn't in any of the photos - he got to see the planes up close!!

Patti Rice

Today I am dedicating my post to someone very special to me...my sister-in-law, Patti Rice. There are a lot of great things that can be said of Patti. She is an amazing wife and mother. Her home and her children are a testimony of that. I respect that testimony and frequent her with questions about things I struggle with as a wife and mother. I have to say though, that as much as I esteem this testimonial, that is not what I am going to focus on in this post.
Today I am going to focus on the level of kind-heartedness that Patti possesses. A level of caring that I deeply admire. Throughout the 17 years that I have been married to her brother, I have seen Patti dedicate her life to being a Pastor's wife. I have seen her open up her home to, and be a friend to complete strangers. Not in a robotic, dutiful, servitude, but in an unnatural, unselfish, choice to help someone. I say unnatural because the human heart is naturally selfish. I know in my own personal life, I can be SO caught up in the dailies, that everything and everyone else falls by the way side. I am sure that Patti has her moments when setting aside her own life endeavors aren't convenient or easy, but the fact that she strives to set them aside and be a friend to someone in need - someone that may be a complete stranger - is a quality of caring that I covet. Patti hasn't limited this purposeful consideration of others to strangers. I have seen her extend the same love to her family and extended family. "Naturally", you say. I say maybe. I think sometimes it is easier to help a stranger than to help a family member. What is the saying...You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family. I find that usually the people closest to you are the ones that hurt you the most - because you love them. I have to say that in my life's moments, where I have taken offense and not forgiven as I should, it is, and has been, Patti who, by her testimony, and sometimes hard-loving words, reminds me what is right. I don't know how many of you have read my son, Brandon's, post on "being a leader and follower" (August 15,2010 post on this blog), but you should read it, it is a great post.;) In it Brandon talks about being a leader and follower - not setting yourself so high above others that you are only an example, but setting yourself among the followers so that you are more easily seen and can help carry and pick up those that need to be carried and picked up. This is who Patti is...my leader and my follower. She has been an example for me, and she has been right beside me and picked me up on several occasions. I love you Patti - and thank you!!

Patti and myself during the delivery of Elli back in March - this is the only photo I have of Patti and I - so - don't look at me - focus on her!

Meet Poseidon

Hello, it's me Josh, and this is our new fish... POSEIDON!

Since our old fish died before we left Ohio, we thought we would get another one.
We got the name from the movie Percy Jackson. (Poseidon is one of the Greek gods.)

This is a picture from Halloween 2007. Jason and Reagan are 10 months old in this picture. They reminded us so much of Charlie Brown and Linus that we dressed them up as Charlie Brown and Linus for Halloween.
This is Jason and Reagan last week. They are 3 years old now and they still remind us of Charlie Brown and Linus.

The Matt Maher Story

hey everybody, it's Brandon. Just before I left for encampment, I heard this song playing on the radio. It has been playing through my head all week, so today I googled it. The song is called "Hold Us Together", written by Matt Maher. I had never heard of him before, so I googled him as well, and found this. This, however, is not the Matt Maher I was looking for.

Turns out, this Matt Maher grew up in our area. He grew up to be a professional soccer player for the Philadelphia Kixx. One night, he was driving drunk on the Atlantic City Expressway and got in an accident. The other driver, a 55 year-old man from Philadelphia, was killed in the accident. It changed the lives of both families. he started giving seminars and classes on being "that guy" because of one wrong decision. He was sentenced to 5 years and 5 months in prison in January of this year, from where he writes his blog.

I had planned to come on here and blog about all the cool stuff I did at encampment, but after reading his story, I think that can wait. It is so important to make right decisions in your life so that we don't end up as "that guy". But while remembering to make the right decisions about ourselves, we need to remember to be "our brother's keeper", which is really what got me about this song. We need to remember to be a leader and a follower so that our brothers and the people who look up to us don't make bad decisions. We need to be an example. That was actually one of the things we learned at encampment and even Civil Air Patrol in general - to be that leader and follower. Someone for people to look up to and know what the right decision is. Hope you are all as inspired by his story as I am.
We travelled again to Fort Dix yesterday to pick up Brandon up from his Civil Air Patrol Encampment.

"During the week long encampment, cadets will attend classes covering topics such as US Air Force structure and mission, aerospace power, and aerospace heritage; CAP emergency services, aerospace education, and the cadet program; and aerospace career opportunities and requirements. Cadets will participate in physical fitness and drill and ceremonies activities daily."

This is a pic of the 120-150 cadets before the pass and review ceremony. Pass and review is basically when the cadets in their groups, or "flights", file by a group of senior officers, and in this case, an audience of parents, and salute them.

So, at the graduation ceremony, they began to announce and give out awards. They were giving an award for "Honor Cadet" for each group. They announced another cadet from Brandon's group, and immediately Chris and I thought - that must be some squared away kid to beat Brandon, maybe its really subjective...

...and then they announced:
Honor Cadet for the 2010 New Jersey Wing Basic Encampment:

Sergeant Brandon Kopp

(they actually said Christopher Kopp, because he's all about awards, and self recognition...but I said it was a glitch in the online application process...)
So - he won for the ENTIRE encampment. The award reads:

"FOR SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETING THE ENCAMPMENT CURRICULUM IN A WAY THAT DENOTES A HIGHER LEVEL OF DEDICATION AND SUPERIORITY OVER OTHER FLIGHT MEMBERS"

Pictures that make me smile...

Today I am posting pictures that make me smile because I miss Brandon sooooo much! I only have to hang on for two more days. I cannot wait to go get him, bring him home, and spoil him like crazy. The only pictures of him posted last night on the CAP Encampment website were... I am ready to see Brandon smiling, being his good natured, happy self, playing his guitar, playing with his brothers, and holding Elli. So, I am going to make myself smile with these photos:

I wish you could hear the conversation taking place in this photo. When I took this picture Elli was listening very carefully to Joshua, who was talking about some total boy thing, in a sweet voice so Elli would listen...
The twins and Elli concentrating so hard, and enjoying our 7$ garage sale find...
I am not sure what Reagan was looking at, but he just looked so cute sitting at the window...I love his little ears...
Elli, eating her thumb, on the beautiful blanket that my mom made for her...
Jason and Reagan and their cute, sweet little smiles - I love those cute little faces(or should I say that cute little face:))...
Best Friends...
